The UAB and the Adamed Foundation organize the first ADAMED SmartUP workshop with the aim of promoting scientific vocations among high school students.

The participants have experienced how physics and chemistry can be the answer to the high impact that human activities have on terrestrial ecosystems.

Barcelona, November 17, 2022.- The Adamed Foundation has organized the first ADAMED SmartUP workshop in Spain under the title “The importance of science in the era of the Anthropocene. Chemistry and physics as a response”, with the collaboration of the Universitat Autonomous University of Barcelona (UAB). Professors from the Faculty of Sciences of the UAB have given in the auditorium of the Center for Mathematical Research (CRM) and in the laboratories of the Faculty of Sciences, a theoretical-practical workshop that has brought together nearly 80 high school students, with the aim of objective of making known how physics and chemistry can be the answer to the high impact that human activities have had on terrestrial ecosystems.

The day was inaugurated by Mr. Lluís Alsedà, CRM director, and Mr. Jorge Blanco Estevan, Public Affairs Manager of Adamed Laboratorios. It has also had the participation of Roser Maneja, professor of the Department of Geography, Neus Puy, Esteve Fàbregas and Francisco Céspedes, professors of the Department of Chemistry, and the researchers of the Department of Physics, Marc Diego and Valentí Rodellas. The activity is part of the 27th Science Week of Catalonia organized by the Catalan Foundation for Research and Innovation (FCRI) and the Government of Catalonia.

Our planet is changing rapidly due to human activity, responsible for global warming and one of the top five pressures driving the loss of the world’s biodiversity along with habitat loss, overexploitation, pollution and invasive alien species. But science can also be the solution to counteract this negative impact.

The students who have participated in the physics workshop have discovered how radioactivity is everywhere and that, although it is often associated with something dangerous that can cause harm to people and the environment, it is also the answer to today’s problems. today through different scientific, medical and industrial applications. They have carried out different experiments to understand basic concepts about this phenomenon, such as radioactive decay, types of radioactivity and the dangers associated with radioactivity.

On the other hand, those students who have attended the chemistry laboratory have discovered the new uses of biomass, the chemistry of wood and biorefineries, and have experienced how value-added products are generated in a sustainable manner. The students have learned different current applications of green chemistry through the extraction of an acid-base indicator from red cabbage with which they have cooked a green fried egg to understand the operation of this phenomenon that is used to separate antioxidants , acids and sugars present in biomass pyrolysis liquids, and have discovered how to produce hydrogen in a green way with hydrochloric acid and zinc shavings.

About ADAMED SmartUP.

ADAMED SmartUP is a scientific and educational program for high school students interested in science. The aim of the initiative is to support exceptionally gifted young people in science and enable them to develop their scientific vocations with the help of experienced professionals and renowned scientists.

The goal is pursued through a scholarship program organized in Poland, as well as through the ADAMED SmartUP Academy, a series of free and open courses, delivered in the form of academic classes for young science enthusiasts. ADAMED SmartUP begins its activities in Spain in 2022 with this scientific conference that aims to promote scientific vocations among high school students. ADAMED SmartUP is organized by the Adamed Foundation, created in 2014 by Adamed Pharma, a pharmaceutical and biotechnology company with more than 35 years of experience.
