-E2S Power’s deal with India Power paves the way to decarbonise fossil fuel power plants
WETTINGEN, Switzerland, Dec. 19, 2022 /PRNewswire/ — E2S Power, a leading developer of thermal energy storage solutions, and India Power Corporation Limited (IPCL), one of India’s leading power utilities, have signed an agreement for the operation of a pilot 250 KWh thermal energy storage unit in India. The pilot unit has been designed, built and tested at the E2S Power facilities in less than nine months. It has passed factory acceptance tests and will be delivered to India in the first quarter of 2023. This is the first step towards rolling out the E2S solution worldwide.
This collaboration will help transform thermal power plant assets into clean energy storage facilities, contributing significantly to the growth of renewable energy in the country. This solution can be deployed in the short term to provide urgently needed energy storage, while using most of the infrastructure of the thermal power plants that are being retired and safeguarding jobs.
“Long duration energy storage system is the need of the hour due to the rapid growth of renewable power generation in the global energy mix, and this solution is perfect. This technology will also provide a solution to meet the requirement for flexibility of power plants. Through this pilot project in India we will show how the technology works in real time so that all stakeholders can make decisions with ease and confidence.” said Anand K Pandey, Head of Renewables and New Business, India Power Corporation Limited.
IPCL and E2S Power will work together with leading Indian power and renewable energy companies to identify, assess and deliver optimized integrated thermal power solutions for existing plants that are being phased out.
“India is one of the most important energy markets in the world. The growth in renewable energy capacity and the opportunity to use valuable existing energy infrastructure is a perfect fit with the thermal energy storage technology developed by our engineers” said Dr. Sasha Savic, CEO of E2S Power.
The evolution of the energy generation mix and the growing demand pose new challenges and opportunities when it comes to operating and maintaining a reliable electrical system. New storage technologies will play a key role in achieving India’s target of 500 GW of renewable energy by 2030. E2S Power’s long duration energy storage is a solution that offers a pathway to green energy while giving new life to existing assets, retain skilled jobs and create new ones.
