KOHLER, Wis., Sept. 20, 2023 /PRNewswire/ — Kohler Co., award-winning British artist and designer Dr. Samuel Ross, and his industrial design studio SR_A unveil innovative limited-edition Kohler faucets at Design Miami/ 2023 x SR_A Formation 01. The product’s striking angles and bold industrial Haptic Orange color challenge the traditional design and performance of a bathroom faucet. The Kohler x SR_A collaboration embraces Samuel’s avant-garde artistic approach while honoring Kohler’s 150-year legacy of innovation and craftsmanship in developing a new design language for water solutions. This new limited edition faucet challenges the way we interact daily with the form and function of an everyday object, pushing the boundaries of materials, shapes and colors.
“Throughout our history, we have operated at the forefront of innovation, creativity and bold leadership – attributes that align with Samuel and SR_A’s approach. The Kohler x SR_A Formation 01 faucet is the first tangible execution of our partnership and an experience unlike anything we have seen in the industry,” said David Kohler, president and CEO. “The innovative ideas shared in our collaboration help drive our industry leadership and challenge us to expand our product and process perspectives.”
MATERIALSCast as a singular sculptural object, as opposed to traditional finishing plating processes, Formation 01 sets new expectations for the water ritual. The faucet is made of Neolast, a new material exclusive to Kohler that allows dramatic expression of form, a new language of shapes and color saturation. Mounted on a cast iron plate, Formation 01 perfectly balances cutting-edge design with the timeless industrialism of cast iron.
SHAPES Kohler’s advanced engineering of a custom water channel allows water delivery through the acute angles of the faucet. The fluid dynamics required by the expressive shape and angles of the faucet demand precise control of pressure to allow reinterpretation and design of how water flow should be experienced. The rocker-style handle completes the ultra-modern aesthetic of the piece.
COLORSThe industrial Haptic Orange shade evokes the 1967 debut of “Tiger Lily” in Kohler’s bath line, and combines Ross’s signature color with Kohler’s legacy of color leadership.
Manufactured in line with SR_A’s progressive design study and practical experience, the faucet’s high visibility and eye-catching shape attract attention when installed in any space. Abstract by nature, Formation 01 is open to interpretation to be determined in part by the user.
“We engage with taps every day, developing a perspective on this act is a generational contribution to a study of form and function, related to developing new expectations of water solutions for future generations,” said Dr Ross. “The faucet created in collaboration with Kohler brings together the signatures of our industrial design studio SR_A: an intentionally abstract and reductive use of form and color, sometimes minimal and striking in application. The high visibility of the object links to the collective vision that we have within the philosophy of the design studio, experimentation, linked to hypervisual communication: we focus on future design perspectives and solutions that invite questioning and criticism. This often involves deconstructing familiar objects and forms.”
Formation 01 will debut at the Kohler booth at Design Miami/ (December 6-10, 2023) and will be available for purchase at sra.kohler.com in December. Ahead of the debut, visitors to the Kohler x SR_A website can experience the faucet through an augmented reality filter that allows users to place the faucet in their home space, or anywhere inspiration strikes. .
Kohler and SR_A plan to reveal more details of their multi-year partnership throughout 2023 and 2024, igniting inspiration through physical presentations and brand experiences.
