Since the first edition of the competition, in 2014, this Spanish Cemetery Competition has become one of the most important cultural events in the funeral sector and a benchmark for city councils, which have spent years prioritizing the care of their cemeteries and promoting them as integrated spaces in the city that deserve to be visited. The initiative seeks to recognize the historical, social, artistic and patrimonial interest of Spanish cemeteries. Funespaña and the magazine “Adiós cultural” have carried out important work to raise awareness among citizens about the patrimonial importance that the enclosures house. As a result of the enormous media repercussion of the previous calls, they have managed to promote cemeteries as tourist resources in the participating towns, to claim them as places full of life and the memory of the people who inhabited them.
