The multinational Levantina Group specialized in the stone sector, with almost 70 years of history, is revolutionizing the fight against heat in Spanish cities, thanks to the introduction of Pavex*, a material that due to its characteristics is capable of reducing heat increase in temperatures generated by the soils in the city, which is known as the heat island effect.

Spain, August 16, 2023.- Pavex* is a flooring that is produced through marble. Its success in innovation and sustainability is spreading through the vast majority of cities in Spain. This success is mainly due to the fact that it has a very high Solar Reflectance Index (SRI), which means that it is capable of reflecting the sun’s rays, so it does not absorb as much heat as concrete. This, by itself, manages to significantly reduce heat absorption, which does not happen, for example, with other materials such as concrete, avoiding the increase in temperatures in spaces such as squares, walkways and pedestrian avenues.

These characteristics that are increasingly in demand are perfectly explained by Miguel Couto, sales director at Levantina Group, since he knows the product inside out: “Until now, concrete, in its different variants, has been the ubiquitous option in cities despite its contribution to the heat island effect. Fortunately, public administrations’ sensitivity to climate change is changing and natural stone is positioning itself as the best alternative to help reduce high urban temperatures.”

This implies, the manager points out, that “urban interventions with Pavex* are increasingly in demand in populations where high temperatures are very common in summer, both for recently created spaces and for renovating environments that require very specific actions and with high aesthetic criteria”.

Thus, so far, more than 40 Spanish municipalities have installed this pavement in different urban interventions, including large cities such as Valencia, Alicante, Malaga or Zaragoza. Several of these projects have been developed in spaces of special historical and cultural interest, such as the surroundings of the Roman Temple and the City Hall of Córdoba, the entrances to the Hermitage of Joaquín in Ademuz (Valencia), the entrance to the Parador del Real Monasterio de Santa María de Veruela (Zaragoza) or the parade ground of the Count’s Palace of Cocentaina (Alicante).

Although the figure may soon be very short. And it is that the increase in temperatures, together with the growth of cities, is becoming a determining factor when thinking about alternatives that can provide solutions to both problems. “The way in which we build cities has a clear impact on the environment, which is why urban planning itself can offer solutions to help create more sustainable and comfortable spaces for the citizen,” explains Couto about the success of the Pavex* from Levantina Group.

EcoUrban, Levantina’s new sustainable commitment

Along with the growth of Pavex*, Levantina is also working on other solutions to achieve more sustainable spaces. The group’s latest revolution is the treatment with EcoUrban, launched this year by the company for application on facades. This treatment is capable of generating a decontaminating, self-cleaning and antibacterial effect thanks to the catalysis process that triggers its contact with sunlight and humidity in the environment. In this way, the firm points out that “an area of 5,000 m2 can clean the air in a similar way to a forest of 300 trees, contributing to improving the sustainability of cities.”

In short, both Pavex*, already consolidated, and the development of EcoUrban are good examples of how the company works, combining its long experience in the stone sector with a continuous desire for innovation and all of this guided by sustainability as an emblem. of your products.
