Some 1,100 students of engineering and other technical careers, plus some 200 volunteers, gathered at the Barcelona-Catalunya circuit, in the town of Montmeló (Barcelona), from August 6 to 12, within the framework of the Formula Student competitions. The winners of the great international university competition were all European teams. The University of Kiel (Germany) in the category of electric cars; the University of Brasov (Romania), in combustion; while in the category without pilots or driverless, it went to the University of Lisbon. The following in the classification were the University of Lisbon and UPC Terrassa, as second and third place respectively, in the electric category. In the combustion area, the University of Malaga and the University of FH Aachen (Germany). Lastly, in driverless, second and third place went to ETSEIB from the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya, and the University of Modena (Italy). The evaluation of the organizers The Society of Automotive Technicians (STA), organizer of the event, highlighted the excellence of a new generation of professionals. “The competition allows students in their last year of Engineering to be part of a real professional experience, in which they acquire a higher level of knowledge in the automotive sector,” said Robert López, director of FSS. The promoters have qualified as The 13th edition of FSS was a complete success, with 39 teams, 22 of which came from abroad, from countries like England, Israel and Germany. In addition, the presence of women has been increasing. A dozen sponsors attended the briefing that took place at the Media Center on Friday, August 11. Among others, Tomás Mejía, director of the Public Office for the Transformation of the Mobility and Automotive Industries (Optima), of the Department of Business and Labor of the Generalitat de Catalunya; the commentator and Formula 1 team engineer Albert Fàbrega; the executive of the car company Nissan, Jordi Bel; Bosch’s sales vice president, Ricardo Olaya; the head of corporate communication at Gestamp, María Gabriela Páez; and the general manager of Applus Idiada, Josep-Maria Farran.An opportunity to attract talent The delegates of the sponsoring and collaborating companies highlighted the enormous opportunities to attract talent to Spain and Catalonia thanks to contests such as FSS. Growth and competitiveness in the globalized world is already a requirement, agreed the members of the entourage. One of the main innovations has been the participation of single-seaters without a driver. The driverless category began in 2018, as a simple demonstrative category that, in a short time, has become a full-fledged competition category. Currently, driverless represents one of the main bets for the future of the FSS and the STA, which highlights values such as technological and academic excellence.
