NUR-SULTAN, Kazakhstan, Dec. 2, 2022 /PRNewswire/ — On November 29, the President of the Republic of Kazakhstan, Kassym-Jomart Tokayev, paid a historic visit to France and held a meeting with his French counterpart, Emmanuel Macron. The presidents discussed the development prospects of the strategic partnership and cooperation between the two countries.
That same day, the Astana Club meeting, organized in support of the president’s visit, was held in Paris. The meeting was dedicated to the theme “Greater Eurasia: building dialogue in the age of uncertainty.”
The Astana Club platform once again brought together prominent international personalities, such as world-renowned economist Nouriel Roubini, former Bank of Israel head and Group of Thirty chairman Jacob Frenkel, Financial Stability Board (FSB) chairman Klaas Knoth, Nobel Peace Prize winner on climate change Raekwon Chung and many others.
During the key session, Professor Roubini noted the importance of Central Asia in continuing the policy of balance between the great powers. “It is necessary to diversify allies. There is no point in relying only on Russia, China, the EU or the United States.”
Considering current geopolitics, former US Presidential Assistant for Homeland Security Lisa Curtis noted: “Until this year, few questioned Russia’s influence in Central Asia. However, tectonic shifts certainly raise questions. about whether the Central Asian states will allow themselves to remain dependent only on Russia.”
Curtis believes that a window of opportunity is opening for the world to build stronger relationships with the region.
Peter Frankopan, a well-known historian from Oxford University pointed out that the process of deglobalization will require a new adaptation.
Frankopan stressed: “Central Asian states are in a difficult area. The need to maneuver between Moscow and Beijing is forcing countries to use special approaches when conducting foreign policy.”
The session was moderated by Yerzhan Saltybaev, Director of the Kazakhstan Institute of World Economics and Politics, who stated that “we are witnessing the emergence of Eurasia as a single economic space, and Central Asia and Kazakhstan have great potential to become a hotspot for meeting of the continent”.
The experts stressed that the key factor for stability in Eurasia is the rapid resolution of the conflict in Ukraine. All conference participants especially noted the great importance and opportunity of the visit of the President of Kazakhstan to France at this political moment.
