Statement by ECW CEO Yasmine Sherif on the occasion of the 365 days of war in Ukraine
NEW YORK, Feb. 24, 2023 /PRNewswire/ — Today it is with all our regret that we mark 365 days of a brutal war against Ukraine.
Through this illegal act of aggression, more than 450 children have been killed and another 900 injured. The shelling and shelling damaged 3,000 educational institutions and completely destroyed 420 schools and learning centers. Up to 5.7 million children have had their education interrupted, with no end in sight.
Why make a war and leave a legacy of so much suffering? This is not leadership. It is a violation of International Humanitarian Law and the UN Charter, deliberately and systematically attacking human beings and with it their human rights.
The attacks on schools, hospitals and other vital infrastructure are senseless, cruel and inhumane. Why is it so difficult to understand the basic imperative that all girls and boys affected by this war have a right to safe and protective learning environments? They cannot and should not be objective. These innocent children have the right to experience hope.
In all, an estimated 2 million children have been forced to flee their homes in Ukraine, and the war has created seismic effects around the world. In Africa, rising food prices are forcing children to go to school hungry, in Europe and North America spikes in energy prices and inflation are creating growing economic uncertainty, and across the globe Around the world, resources are diverted from essential services like education, healthcare and humanitarian aid for forgotten crises in places like the Sahel.
The girls and boys of Ukraine are not alone. Worldwide, the number of children in high-intensity conflict zones has increased in recent years to a total of 230 million. This is more than the total populations of Germany, Italy and the UK combined.
We live in a shameful era in human history. We have mismanaged the earth and humanity. The war against Ukraine indicates that we are nowhere near greater humanity and decency, peace and security.
Today, we honor students, their parents, their teachers, and school administration in the Ukraine, as well as in Sub-Saharan Africa, Asia, the Middle East, and Latin America. May they be the ones who one day change the course.
