BEIJING, Nov. 15, 2023 /PRNewswire/ — Chinese President Xi Jinping was warmly welcomed by US officials at the airport after his arrival in San Francisco on Tuesday for a summit with US President Joe Biden and the 30th Meeting of APEC Economic Leaders.

US officials, including California Governor Gavin Newsom and Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen, were present at the airport to welcome President Xi.

On the way from the airport to the hotel, many overseas Chinese were seen lining up waving national flags of China and the United States to greet Xi.

“We really welcome him. It’s really important that they know with APEC that it’s a good opportunity for him and Biden to really reset our relationship and continue to grow,” said Robert Weisenmiller, former chairman of the California Energy Commission.

The two presidents will hold in-depth discussions on issues of strategic, general and fundamental importance in shaping China-US relations and important issues concerning global peace and development, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson said on Monday. Mao Ning.

Xi’s upcoming talks with Biden will be the first face-to-face meeting between the two presidents since they met on the sidelines of the G20 summit last year in Bali, Indonesia. However, 2022 proved difficult for ties between the two nations, as then-US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s visit to the Chinese region of Taiwan severely strained relations.

Optimism slowly increased at the end of this year. Beijing and Washington have reestablished communication and maintained frequent interactions in various sectors in recent months, setting new conditions for upcoming talks between the two leaders.

The world is watching to see whether the two heads of state can improve on the Bali results and make further progress in bilateral relations in San Francisco.

“I was excited when I saw the leaders of China and the leaders of the United States put aside all differences on the geopolitical challenges that their teams regularly discuss to sit down at APEC. Because they recognize the importance of this kind of engagement,” said Ertharin Cousin , former director of the United Nations World Food Programme.

During his stay, Chinese President Xi Jinping will also attend a series of events with the aim of finding common ground with the leaders of Asia-Pacific economic entities. San Francisco is the host city for APEC Leaders Week 2023 from November 11 to 17, with the theme “Creating a resilient and sustainable future for all.”
