-Cumulative shipments of 210 mm modules reach 150 GW; Trina Solar represents half of them with its 210 mm modules
CHANGZHOU, China, September 14, 2023/PRNewswire/ — A report from TrendForce:
Cumulative shipments of 210mm modules reached 150GW at the end of June, with Trina Solar accounting for half of that figure, global market intelligence provider TrendForce says.
By the end of the year, 210mm module production capacity is expected to reach 722 GW, or 69.83% of total capacity, TrendForce said. The increase in capacity and shipments demonstrates that large-format, high-power modules are rapidly advancing the development of the entire value chain. In addition, the output power of the 210mm n-type module has exceeded 700W, which underlines the openness and innovation of the 210mm product technology platform.
Production capacity for 210mm wafers increased 89.3% over the year, with 210mm modules accounting for 70% of total module capacity.
Larger, thinner wafers have advanced rapidly, with large format wafers quickly dominating the market, thanks to large cost reductions and efficiency improvements. Large format wafer capacity is likely to reach 878.6GW this year, representing a market share of 95.33%, TrendForce said. Particularly noteworthy is the fact that the capacity of 210mm wafers is expected to reach 357.2 GW, up 89.3% from last year.
Large format cell capacity is likely to reach 1,136.2GW this year, 96.93% of the total, TrendForce said. The capacity of 210mm cells is expected to reach 899.9 GW, up 179% from last year. This growth will also increase its market share to 76.8%.
In the module segment, TrendForce estimates that the capacity of large format modules will reach 961 GW this year, with a market share of 92.84%. The production capacity of 210mm modules is expected to increase to 722 GW, up 116% from last year, accounting for 69.83% of the total capacity. Capacity is expected to continue expanding in the coming years, consolidating the leading position of large format modules in the market.
Large format, high power modules account for more than 90% of tender activity and market penetration of n-type modules is accelerating
Thanks to cost reductions and improvements in efficiency and the expansion of application configurations, large format, high power modules now represent more than 90% of tender activity, establishing themselves as the leading choice in the end market.
The total supply capacity of photovoltaic modules in China in the first seven months of the year was 137.78GW. Modules with power greater than 540W represented 98.37% of the total capacity tendered with 135.5GW. Large format modules (182 mm/210 mm) accounted for 98.42%, with 135.6GW. N-type modules reached 18.8% with 25.9GW, and that share continues to grow.
High demand has produced 150 GW in cumulative shipments of 210 mm modules.
As of the end of June, cumulative shipments of 210mm modules (including the 210R) amounted to 150 GW, according to TrendForce. Among shipments of 150 GW and 210 mm modules, Trina Solar accounted for more than 75 GW.
TrendForce forecasts that continued cost reductions and efficiency improvements will continue to drive large format module shipments this year with shipments exceeding 85%. Additionally, shipments of 210mm modules are expected to reach record levels.
Major players are introducing numerous n-type products including 210mm n-type modules taking the industry into the 700W era
With the mass production of Vertex N 700W modules, Trina Solar is leading the industry into the PV 7.0 era. The company said in its semi-annual financial report that by the end of the year it will have established production capacity of 50 GW for n-type wafers and 75 GW for cells, of which n-type cells will account for 40 GW.
In the realm of n-type modules, HJT modules are mostly 210mm, while TOPCon modules are mostly 210mm (210R) and 19X. When comparing 210mm n-type modules (210R) with 19X n-type modules, the former significantly outperform the latter in power output.
The 210mm n-type technology is intended to deliver greater value throughout the industrial chain and end market, thereby promoting the high-quality development of the photovoltaic industry.
