Communication to transmit content and content to create value

Communication technologies were developed to facilitate communication between people, especially those over long distances.

Chen believes this technological evolution will pave the way to success in the voice industry. For example, ultra-HD videos were added to allow the dial pad to become a new media platform, opening up new space for operators’ content operations. Smart and interactive capabilities have been added to transform a call into a virtual assistant, offering users services such as translation, call answering, and speech-to-text conversion. Added data channels to connect calls to the Internet, allow business numbers to serve as a business services platform, and upgrade the dial pad to a service portal. For example, with interactive menus, users can check and subscribe to telecommunications services, as well as book meals or other services, without installing or registering for any application. New Calling will bring new value to operators’ platform-based operations.

Intelligence drives New Calling and improves communication experiences

Chen said Huawei launched New Calling during last year’s MWC to help operators shift their business models from voice-only operations to content operations. With the 1 3 N architecture, New Calling leverages the core voice and video network to enable three competitive calling capabilities: UHD calling, interactive calling, and smart calling. These capabilities help launch a variety of innovative services. Over the past year, Huawei helped a leading operator attract millions of New Calling users.

This year, Huawei will launch New Calling-Advanced to upgrade New Calling’s intelligence capabilities. Multi-modal communication function (MCF) will be introduced to integrate intelligent processing components developed by Huawei and third parties. Multimodal communications based on MCF will give rise to a variety of atomic services, such as real-time translation and real-time voice-controlled avatars, allowing operators and industry partners to create more new services and scenarios. New Calling is entering the era of 5.5G multimodal communications.

Develop the dial pad on a service platform

Chen noted that the native dialer gives operators a natural advantage and that industry partners should jointly develop the native dialer into a service platform to offer more value-added services. With the native dialer, New Calling can take advantage of high bandwidth and high-performance computing to provide users with optimal experiences. Additionally, New Calling enables industry users to customize various services based on mini-applications and interactive capabilities provided by IMS data channels, maximizing the value of operators’ calling networks.

The growth of the new calling industry requires collective efforts from operators, chip and terminal suppliers, and industry and standards organizations. Huawei welcomes more partners to participate in the development of New Calling.
