The land travel platform has prepared a ranking that compares the most popular travel routes with the aim of finding train routes this summer that represent an alternative to air transport, less polluting and without wasting time
The Madrid-Barcelona route is one of the favorites in Europe to travel by train instead of opting for the plane as it is faster and more sustainable. This is reflected in a report published by Omio, the world’s leading ground travel platform, which analyzes the most popular summer routes so that travelers are well prepared and, at the same time, can make more conscious decisions based on their own preferences. In this way, it highlights those trips in which the bus and the train embody a better alternative than the plane, both in terms of time for the tourist and in terms of respect for the environment. To determine which routes travelers can arrive on to their destination faster by land than by air, Omio has taken into account not only flight times, but check-in times as well. Thus, according to this study, the fastest national routes in Europe in which the train beats the plane are Rome-Florence (where you travel 79 minutes faster by train), Paris-Lyon (77 minutes faster) and Madrid-Barcelona (56 minutes). Comparatively, the world’s fastest train route within the same country is from New York to Washington. Here, travelers save almost an hour and a half of time (84 minutes). The situation, on the other hand, is significantly reversed, the study highlights, when it comes to international cross-border routes. This ranking is based on the 50 most booked train, bus and plane routes through Omio in Germany, the United Kingdom, Spain, Italy and France in the summer of 2022 (between June 22 and September 23). For air routes, a billing time of 90 minutes for domestic flights and 120 minutes for international flights was added, as well as the transfer time from the airport to the city center (determined through Google Maps). CO₂ emissions in kilograms per train/bus/flight were calculated using values from the climate protection organization Atmosfair. Time is not everything As the report produced by Omio shows, time is not everything when choosing one means of transport or another. Aspects such as comfort, enjoying the landscapes or traveling in more relaxing conditions often influence the decisions of travelers. Some tourists who also value climate protection when traveling. In fact, compared to air travel, bus and train travelers produce between 70% and 88% less CO₂ on the routes studied. Train travelers, the study claims, save an especially large amount of CO₂ on the route from Rotterdam to Brussels, where only 12.38% of the flight’s emissions are emitted. Traveling by train or bus from Prague to Budapest or from Madrid to Barcelona is also especially respectful of the climate (around 16% each).
