Discovering a better future thanks to transformative ideas in education

Michelene (Micki) Chi, Regents and Dorothy Bray Professor at Arizona State University’s Mary Lou Fulton College of Teaching, has been awarded the 2023 Yidan Prize for Educational Research. Her theory of cognitive engagement, called ICAP (Interactive, Constructive , active, passive), has been widely adopted and has established a benchmark for defining active learning, providing teachers with a greater understanding of how students learn and how to design lesson plans and activities to increase their participation.

“Michelene’s most significant contribution to educational research is a scientific theory about how students learn. She has organized profoundly different approaches to active learning into a simple but widely applicable framework, and she is passionate about ensuring that this theory changes educational practice over time. terrain,” explained Andreas Schleicher, head of the jury for the Yidan Educational Research Prize and director of the OECD Directorate for Education and Skills.

With funds from the Yidan Prize project, Micki plans to strengthen the ICAP framework, create professional training modules for primary and secondary teachers, and expand ICAP’s reach globally.

Shai Reshef, president and founder of University of the People, has been awarded the 2023 Yidan Prize for Education Development. His higher education model – an accredited, nonprofit, free, US-based online university with more than 137,000 students worldwide – responds to student needs with an innovative solution and scalable.

“The global challenge of access to higher education means that its transformative impact in terms of opening minds, improving employment and income remains out of reach for many. Shai’s model reinvents higher education, opening up doors to those who were previously excluded,” said Dorothy K. Gordon, Chair of the Yidan Educational Development Prize Jury and Board Member of the UNESCO Institute for Information Technologies in Education.

Shai plans to use the funds from the Yidan Prize project to further expand People’s University and support more students and populations, providing a comprehensive solution to the accessibility and affordability problems of higher education.

Accelerate the progress of education to positively change life and society

The Yidan Prize Foundation is building a global learning community that fosters collaboration between research and practice. Its community continues to grow in both size and influence, strengthening the foundation’s ability to advance partnerships that shape the future of education.

“We are delighted to welcome Micki and Shai to our global community,” said Edward Ma, Secretary General of the Yidan Prize Foundation. “Our jury found that the work of this year’s honorees is broadly applicable and scalable, reinventing education for the needs of today’s learners.”

This year, the Yidan Awards Ceremony and the Yidan Awards Summit will be held on December 3 and 4, respectively. These events bring together leading figures in education, public policy, and philanthropy from around the world to honor the 2023 honorees and discuss solutions that enable significant and lasting advances in education.

Its independent Evaluation Committee is made up of two groups, one focused on educational research and the other on educational development. They carefully and collectively evaluate all applications based on four criteria: that the work is future-oriented, innovative, transformative and sustainable.
