He trusts that Spain will be an engine of growth for the EU

MADRID, 13 Oct. (EUROPA PRESS) –

The first vice president and acting minister of Economic Affairs and Digital Transformation, Nadia Calviño, has expressed confidence that a Government led by Pedro Sánchez will be formed, “providing stability and continuity on the economic policy front.”

“I think it is reassuring for the markets and for companies and investors that Spain will continue the path we have taken these last five years and that it is giving very good results,” he stressed.

Likewise, he highlighted that in the current context of slowdown at a European and global level, Spain is doing quite well and can continue to be an engine of growth for the entire EU.

“Everyone expects Spain to be the fastest growing large economy in the EU this year and next. The labor market is still strong, investment is also strong, so we can also continue to be an engine of growth for the whole the EU,” said Calviño in statements to Bloomberg TV, reported by Europa Press.

Likewise, Calviño has highlighted Spain’s good results in containing inflation, adding that, between now and the end of the year, it will be necessary to see if some of these measures should be maintained, always with a focused and temporary approach.

“We were a bit of the canary in the mine because when energy prices began to rise internationally, we felt it immediately in 2021, and we implemented a series of measures that have been very successful,” he recalled.

In this sense, the vice president has also pointed out the impact that monetary policy is having in reducing inflation, which is why she has expressed the need to guarantee that Europe continues to register strong growth.

On the other hand, the Spanish vice president has expressed her confidence regarding her possibilities of becoming president of the European Investment Bank (EIB), highlighting the “warm welcome” from her European colleagues.

“I am quite sure that our candidacy is strong,” said Calviño, who is competing in the race for the institution’s position with Margrethe Vestager, former vice president of the European Commission responsible for Competition, as well as Italy’s former finance minister under under the orders of Mario Draghi, Daniele Franco, and the Polish Teresa Czerwinska, who currently holds the vice presidency of the EIB.

“I have received a very warm welcome from all colleagues in Europe and strong support. So I hope that between now and the end of the year this candidacy will be successful. But all these issues are very complicated, so you can never take anything for granted “, has warned.

In this regard, Calviño has pointed out that the EIB is a very important institution for Europe and will be even more so in the future.
