Detectives scoured a wooded area Thursday morning where they found human remains believed to be those of a missing 92-year-old Leesburg woman.
Officials found the remains in a shallow grave during a search Wednesday for Rubye James, who hasn’t been seen since Monday. Her car, which was also missing, was parked not far from the grave, according to the Lake County Sheriff’s Office.
Detectives confirmed the remains were of a black female, but are waiting for a medical examiner to positively identify them during an autopsy, which was scheduled Thursday.
Lt. John Herrell said detectives believe they are James’.
The Sheriff’s Office hasn’t said what detectives think happened to James, but called the circumstances “suspicious.” She lives alone at a home on Edgewood Road, just outside Leesburg.
Deputies started searching for her on Wednesday evening after someone called asking for them to do a well-being check on her.
She wasn’t at home and her white 2016 Hyundai Veloster was missing, Herrell said. A few hours later, detectives found the car and shallow grave less than five miles away.
Deputies were asking anyone with information about where she was earlier this week to call the Sheriff’s Office at 352-343-2101.
