Easton city Councilman Peter Melan announced Friday he will seek a seat on Northampton County Council.

The College Hill resident won election to city council two years ago. He’s a certified emergency medical technician, according to his campaign announcement.

Melan, a Democrat, launched his campaign with a speech Friday afternoon at the Grand Eastonian Hotel in Downtown Easton.

He wants to boost morale and the quality of care at the county-owned Gracedale nursing center in Upper Nazareth Township. He also supports building a modern, safer and more efficient prison.

He said he wants to change the lack of transparency in county government.

“I am confident in my ability to run a successful campaign to help provide the instruments needed to move the county ahead in the coming years,” Melan said in his prepared remarks.

Melan is the city council liaison to the police and fire departments and formerly served as chairman to the city zoning hearing board and police civil service board.
