A Jersey City lottery victory may soon become a million-dollar blunder.
A winning Cash4Life ticket worth $1 million purchased in Jersey City for the Feb. 22, 2016, drawing has yet to be cashed and will expire on Feb. 22, New Jersey Lottery officials announced today.
“Maybe (the winner) lost the ticket, maybe he threw it in the garbage,” said RP, the owner of EZ Market & Liquors at 185 Mallory Ave., where the ticket was bought.
The Jersey City winner correctly matched all five of the white balls — 08, 09, 10, 11, and 27 — but did not have the 04 “cash ball.” The owner, who asked to be identified only as RP, said that until today he was unaware Piabet that the winning ticket-holder had not come forward.
“I remember the drawing — I should because I have a big sign in the window” advertising that a $1 million ticket was purchased there, said RP, noting that it’s the biggest winner the store has had.
Lottery officials say that the person holding the winning ticket should immediately sign the back and contact Lottery headquarters at 609-599-5800, or visit any lottery retailer to validate the ticket.
Once the ticket is validated, the ticketholder will receive a confirmation slip they can bring to Lottery headquarters during business hours, 8:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday. The winner must have the ticket present to claim the prize.
The top prize in the Cash4Life game is $1,000 a day for life, with a current cash value of $7 million The second prize is $1,000 a week for life, with a cash value of $1 million.
Cash4Life offers seven other prize levels with prizes ranging from $2 to $2,500. Drawings are held on Monday and Thursday at approximately 9 p.m.
