JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – As hurricane season approaches, Florida Power & Light Company has taken the initiative to debunk common misconceptions about power outages, ensuring that the community is well-prepared in case of an emergency. Outages can vary in duration, lasting from hours to days, or even weeks when a tropical storm or hurricane makes landfall.

Marshall Hastings, a representative from Florida Light and Power Company – the largest power utility in Florida, highlighted some mistakes people tend to make during storms. “Safety has to be paramount for our customers,” Hastings emphasized. “It’s not the time to venture out into the community to assess the impacts immediately after a storm. There are many unknown factors in the aftermath of a storm.”

Hastings clarified that in the event of a power outage, customers do not need to report it. “We have a comprehensive understanding of which houses have power and which do not within our energy grid. The only instance where a customer needs to reach out is if their entire neighborhood has power except for their residence,” Hastings explained.

During a storm, it is unnecessary to turn off the lights and wait in darkness with a flashlight. Hastings advised that individuals can leave their power on as it does not impact the situation. “Whether your lights are on or off does not affect the outcome. It solely depends on how the storm is affecting your area,” Hastings stated.

According to FEMA, severe weather conditions such as hurricanes, tornadoes, wind, and rainstorms often lead to prolonged power outages. Hastings emphasized the importance of having a preparedness plan in place, including stocking up on groceries and having emergency kits ready to ensure the safety of oneself and their family.

FPL recommended that all customers download their app ahead of the storm season. This will enable individuals to monitor the status of their power supply and determine whether it has been restored in the event of an evacuation, aiding in the decision of when to return home.

In conclusion, Hastings stressed the significance of proactive preparation for storm season. “Every day that we are not actively responding to a storm, we are dedicating to preparing for one. It is crucial for our customers to make necessary arrangements well in advance of the storm season, even before any storm is on the horizon,” Hastings remarked.
