The two suspects from Montreal were arrested Tuesday afternoon by the Quebec City Police Service (SPVQ).
The same day, three complaints of fraud with a similar modus operandi were filed with 9-1-1, which alerted the authorities.
The two men posed as the lawyer for the victims’ grandson, telling them that the latter had been involved in an accident with a pregnant woman.
The people targeted by the scheme then had to take out “a few thousand dollars” which then had to be recovered by these same individuals.
“Given that the fraudsters were very active, the police and investigators executed a joint and dynamic strategy which made it possible to arrest the suspects in the afternoon,” said SPVQ spokesperson David Peltier.
They were met by investigators, before being released on a promise to appear. They will return to court at a later date.
The Quebec police suspect that these fraudsters may have had other victims and are asking citizens to contact them if they have been targeted by a similar deception.
