Speed limits on Lehigh Valley highways were reduced to 45 mph as snow picked up in intensity early Thursday morning.

The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation instituted the limits by 4:30 a.m. after a light coating of snow about 3:30 was quickly cover by a heavier wet inch or more.

As much as 12 inches was expected.

Route 33, Route 22 and Interstate 78 are all impacted by the change.

Just before 6 a.m., the Pennsylvania Turnpike dropped its speeds in some sections — including the entire Northeast Extension — and banned trucks hauling more than one trailer or empty trailers.

The New Jersey Department of Transportation advised drivers to reduce the speed.

“If you must travel, use extreme caution and take extra time to reach your destination,” the National Weather Service said in a short-term forecast.

NJ Transit was expecting to operate normal schedules, but said it will advise customers if the weather changes that plan.

LANtaVan and LANtaFlex bus services won’t start until 9 a.m., due to the weather.
