WOODBURY — Inspira Health Network said it would maintain a presence in Woodbury after it relocates the local hospital to Harrison Township in a few years.
Part of Inspira’s future plans in the county seat were revealed Tuesday with the announcement that it will open a new radiation oncology center on its Woodbury campus.
The new Radiation Oncology Center, which is set to open this spring, will offer patients advance radiation therapy for cancer care.
“Inspira has been providing high quality radiation oncology services to patients in South Jersey for more than 35 years and we are pleased to be able to expand our program to a brand new facility on our Woodbury campus,” said Patrick Nolan, chief operating officer at Inspira Medical Center Woodbury, in a press release. “This new facility will provide them with state-of-the-art care that is close to home and in a unique and healing environment.”
Inspira is working with Saphire + Albarran Architecture in Pennington and Veritas Medical Solutions to develop the center, which will be located across from the hospital on Oak Street.
Inspira will spend $100K on Woodbury redevelopment study
A new feature in this facility will be radiation treatments offered in rooms with windows to the outside world, marking a change from the typical windowless setting for such treatments.
Mario Sergi, director of Medical Imaging, Radiation Oncology and Oncology Data Services at Inspira, explained that this new system, called SmartVue Natural Light Solution, adds the outside view without affecting radiation shielding.
The new center will also offer a radiotherapy system which will include 3D mapping for more precise tumor location, higher radiation doses and reduced damage to healthy tissue, according to the announcement.
“By combining state-of-the-art radiation therapy equipment with a unique healing environment, our experienced therapists and staff will be able to offer patients in the region with a new approach to cancer treatment,” said Sergi.
While the new hospital in Harrison, set to open in about three years, will ultimately replace many functions of the Woodbury location, the Woodbury site will maintain a satellite emergency department, observation beds and some outpatient services, keeping approximately 500 employees at the site.
The health network has talked of plans to spend $7 million on improvements and redevelopments to the campus.
