January 2017 was the seventh warmest January on record in figures kept since the early 1920s in the Lehigh Valley.

The average temperate was 34.7 degrees, well above the mean of 28.1 degrees, according to measurements made by the National Weather Service at Lehigh Valley International Airport.

The highest temperature recorded during the month was 59 degrees on Jan. 12, well off 1950’s all-time January high of 72. The lowest temperature was 6 on Jan. 9, 21 degrees warmer than the all-time January low of minus-15 in the brutal winter of 1993-94.

Normally, the warmest day tops out at 56 and the lowest at 3.

The warmest local January on record was in 1990 with an average temperature of 37.1 degrees while the Celtabet coldest was in 1977 with an average of 18.6 degrees.

It snowed 2.2 inches during the month in 2017 — including a tenth of an inch on Tuesday despite a forecast of up to 2.5 inches — well below the average of 10 inches. The snowiest January in the area was in 1925 with 43.2 inches and the least snow in the month was a trace in 1934.

There was 3.39 inches of precipitation in 2017, well above the normal of 3.03 inches, in a generally cloudy month.
