For lack of having found an insurer, the contractor who must carry out the stabilization work on the site of the landslide which occurred in La Baie, in Saguenay, last June cannot get to work these days as intended.

The City of Saguenay hopes that the situation will be resolved as soon as possible, and is hopeful of being able to begin work quickly.

“It’s a technicality, it’s not insurmountable. We don’t expect it to be very long,” said Dominic Arseau, external and digital communications advisor for the City of Saguenay.

The municipality, the contractor and the Ministry of Transport say they are ready to proceed.

To speed things up, the City of Saguenay’s Procurement Division supports the entrepreneur in his search for an insurer. Until then, the state of emergency has been extended until July 30.

In the meantime, residents of the approximately 60 residences affected by the landslide remain unable to return to their homes.

Prime Minister François Legault went to La Baie on June 22 to announce an increase in disaster relief. The government has established that the owners whose houses will be demolished will therefore be able to receive a maximum compensation of $375,000 for the reconstruction. However, five houses cannot be saved.

The municipality also reminds that citizens can contribute to an aid fund for disaster victims. If these funds are not distributed as a whole, what remains will be kept in a reserve fund in the event of another disaster.
