Packy, the 54-year-old Oregon Zoo elephant who was euthanized Thursday after suffering from tuberculosis, was famous from birth.
As the first elephant born in the Western Hemisphere in 44 years, Packy helped put the Oregon Zoo on the map. He made international headlines and was featured in an 11-page spread in Life magazine.
But for generations of Oregonians who grew up visiting him at the zoo in Washington Park, the memories are more personal.
The Oregon Zoo is planning a memorial for the elephant. Plans are being finalized. But, for now, we’d love to see your pictures and hear your memories about Portland’s most famous zoo creature. Feel free to share in the comments.
