An Oak Lawn man accused of murdering his mother, an aide to U.S. Rep. Dan Lipinski, will be under a suicide watch while being held in Cook County Jail, the man’s lawyer said.

Steven Chmela appeared Tuesday in Bridgeview court as officials executed the no-bail warrant against him for the first-degree murder of Marianne Viverito.

David Sterba, deneme bonusu Chmela’s attorney, said his client had been under a suicide watch while in custody inside the Milwaukee County Jail awaiting extradition to Illinois.

Chmela "has a history of bipolar disorder" and has been hospitalized multiple times for psychiatric treatment, Sterba said Tuesday.

He also has attempted suicide multiple times in the past, Sterba said.

Chmela allegedly stabbed Viverito in the Casinometropol torso with a bladed object in the home they share in the 5100 block of West 105th Place, according to Cook County court records. Oak Lawn police have indicated that she might have been the victim of a domestic altercation.

Viverito, 55, was found by police Jan. 10 during a well-being check. An autopsy declared her death a homicide.

Viverito is the daughter of Stickney Township supervisor and former state Sen. Louis Viverito. She worked for 10 years as Lipinski’s aide.
