Authorities in McHenry County are continuing to investigate the death of a man found inside a burning home Sunday night in northwest suburban Lake in the Hills.
Arthur W. Knutson, 61, was pronounced dead at 9:40 p.m. Sunday at Centegra Hospital-Huntley, where he had been taken after firefighters from the Algonquin-Lake in the Hills Fire District rescued him minutes earlier from a second-story bedroom of his home in the 900 block of Creekview Lane, according to Lake in the Hills police and the McHenry County coroner’s office.
Preliminary findings from an autopsy conducted Monday revealed Knutson suffered burns and inhalation of soot, according to the coroner’s office. Additional testing is pending, and the cause and manner of death remain under investigation. The cause of the fire also remains under investigation, officials said.
The Fire Department responded to a call about 9:05 p.m., police said. A caller told dispatchers that a person was trapped in the home, according to police.
Fire crews reported encountering a large volume of smoke from a fire that originated from the master bedroom, according to police. About 9:20 p.m., the victim was taken to the hospital. The fire was extinguished at 9:40 p.m., police said.
A damage estimate from the fire was not available, police said.
