COPAKE — A Schoharie man is dead after he crashed his truck into a utility pole off of County Route 7A Friday night, according to the Columbia County sheriff’s department.

The driver, Robert W. Lowden of Jefferson, was 46.

The crash happened at approximately 9:37 p.m. just south of Empire Road. Although an investigation is still underway, police said speed and alcohol may be factors in the crash. The 2003 GMC pick-up truck left the west side of the road and the driver’s side of the truck hit the pole. Lowden was pronounced dead at the scene. A passenger in the truck, 31-year-old Michael Steinmetz, Jr., also of Jefferson, suffered internal injuries and was sent to Albany Medical Center for treatment. The road was closed for three hours during the investigation.
