A man who threatened to commit suicide prompted the SWAT team to respond late Monday to the South Austin neighborhood on the city’s West Side.

Just before 10:50 p.m., officers and members of the SWAT team responded to a home in the 1100 block of North Waller Avenue for a call of a man who was threatening to commit suicide, police said.

Officers blocked off Division Street from Massasoit Avenue to Central Avenue while a police light spotlighted the top of a home on Waller Avenue. Nearby residents came out of their homes to see what the police activity was about, though many said they didn’t know the man who was involved in the standoff with police.

About 12:30 a.m., the man walked out of the home and surrendered to officers, police said. He was not injured, and he was taken to an area hospital for evaluation.

The incident marked the third time in a day that a standoff with police prompted the SWAT team to be called out.

The South Austin incident happened minutes after a standoff ended on the city’s Far South Side. In that incident, three men were taken into custody for questioning.

Earlier in the day, the SWAT team responded to the Little Village neighborhood for another standoff. Police later found a man dead inside a home, and a 37-year-old man was taken into police custody.
