Three Boston Bruins defensemen, including Charlie McAvoy, each underwent surgery on Friday and are all at risk of missing the start of the next National Hockey League season.

McAvoy, who had surgery on his left shoulder, is expected to be sidelined for approximately six months, until December. Matt Grzelcyk, shot in the right shoulder, and Mike Reilly, hampered by an ankle injury, will also be absent for the next four or five months.

Even before the opening of the free agent market on July 13, the Bruins still have a valid agreement with five other defensemen for the 2022-2023 season: Hampus Lindholm, Brandon Carlo, Derek Forbort, Jakub Zboril and Connor Clifton.

Remember that the Bruins were eliminated in seven games in the first round of the playoffs by the Carolina Hurricanes.
