New York state officials once considered building a new $500 million home for the Department of Health, including 350,000 square feet of space for its famed Wadsworth Center at SUNY Poly’s Albany campus.
Gov. Andrew Cuomo’s 2018 fiscal budget includes $150 million for a new Wadsworth and Department of Health campus to be built in the Capital Region, although the site has yet to be determined.
However, the original SUNY Poly project plans, which date back to the fall of 2015 before the school was swept up in a corruption scandal, show an ambitious effort to create a major biotech hub that the state envisioned as a “model for public health innovation” worldwide.
