A 13-year-old girl was killed and her grandmother was seriously injured when an SUV being chased by police hit their car in Hammond, Ind. on Wednesday, authorities said.
Police in East Chicago, Ind. started chasing a Dodge Durango Wednesday afternoon, according to Indiana State Police. Hammond police joined the pursuit when the Durango entered Hammond, state police said.
The Durango hit a car carrying Julianna Chambers, 13, and her grandmother at Gostlin Street and Columbia Avenue around 5 p.m.
Julianna was pronounced dead and her grandmother was taken in critical condition to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn.
Information was not immediately available about why police were pursuing the Durango.
The driver of the SUV was taken into custody and charges were pending, authorities said.
