HARRINGTON PARK –  A former borough police officer convicted of molesting six girls has died in state prison, according to the N.J. Department of Corrections.

Gary Stayback (NJDOC) 

Gary Stayback, 70, was serving 30 years at South Woods State Prison in Bridgeton when he died on Jan. 16, state records show.

A cause of death was not given for the former police officer, who was 6-feet, 2-inches tall and 370 pounds, according to state records.

Stayback had spent nearly 30 years as a police officer when he was arrested in the summer of 1999 and charged with committing sex crimes against girls ages 8 to 15 over a seven-year period.

The crimes occurred at Stayback’s homes in River Vale and Hillsdale, according to NorthJersey.com.

The veteran officer resigned shortly after the charges were filed.

In 2001, Stayback was convicted and sentenced to 30 years in prison for more than 20 counts of sexual assault, two counts of attempted sexual assault and multiple counts of endangering the welfare of a child, according to the DOC.
