Tuesday will be a bit of “calm” before we head into another strong wet system later in the week.

Tuesday will start with showers and some cool conditions with icy spots in far east Multnomah County and in rural Washington County. Some areas are reporting spots of ice on the roads and slick conditions.

Later Tuesday, showers (which could be mixed with snow) will turn into more steady rain as a strong low pressure system moves up from the south. High for Tuesday will be 40 degrees.

Winter storm watches have been issued by the National Weather Service for the western and central portions of the Columbia River Gorge, for the Hood River valley, and the southern Washington Cascades ahead of a strong system anticipated for Wednesday and Thursday.

This next system is a strong wet one and is forecast to dump large amounts of rain throughout the Northwest. As of the early Tuesday morning National Weather Service forecast brief, it appears the Wednesday system may produce around 2 inches rain for the inland valleys, 2-4 inches at the coast, and 3-6 inches for higher elevations. Highs in Portland will be 41 degrees.

Higher elevations will see snow. The Santiam and Willamette passes should see 6-12 inches of snow through Wednesday with lesser amounts to the north of Mount Jefferson. The Hood River valley and central Columbia Gorge are forecast to get 2-4 inches of snow.

The Gorge is also under the threat of freezing rain with damaging ice accumulations for Wednesday-Thursday. Avoid travel in the Gorge if you can for Wednesday and Thursday.
