Quebecer Maude-Aimée Leblanc went through the full range of emotions Thursday in Southern Pines, North Carolina, she who concluded the first round of the United States Open with a score of 72 ( 1).
The golfer started the grand slam tournament on the right foot, stalling two consecutive birdies. She came down to earth fairly quickly, committing two bogeys in a row shortly before completing the front nine.
Leblanc appeared to be headed for a 71 under par round, she who, due to a birdie in the 15th, had a cumulative one under par. Two bogeys in the last three pennants, however, gave him his score. She concluded her run with four birdies against five bogeys.
She shares 46th place with a host of opponents, including Canadian Brooke M. Henderson.
The latter, who is returning to the game after a month’s break, had a less colorful day, due to two birdies and a bogey. However, she stumbled heavily at the 10th flag, a par-5 on which she hit the white object seven times.
Lauren Kim, another maple leaf representative present at the event, had several problems, returning a card of 75 (4) which earned her the provisional 112th rank.
With an impressive performance of 64 (-7), American Mina Harigae sits at the top of the rankings, one shot ahead of Sweden’s Ingrid Lindblad.
PGA: Hughes in excellent position in Dublin
On the men’s circuit, Canadian Mackenzie Hughes could hardly wish for better, as he shares the lead after a round at the Memorial tournament in Dublin, Ohio.
In addition to Hughes, five other golfers handed a card of 67 (-5). The Maple Leaf member reached that position thanks to an impressive total of nine birdies. He did, however, commit two bogeys and a double bogey.
Three other Canadians are participating in this event. Corey Conners is also not very far from his compatriot, who shares 11th position, with a score of 69 (-3).
For his part, Adam Svensson is in a comfortable position to hope to qualify for the rounds of the weekend, he who rests at the 48th level after playing the par of 72.
Adam Hadwin did not suffer the same fate. His card of 76 (4) relegated him to 96th place.
