A Seminole County jury has convicted a Sanford man of trying to murder a local police officer.
Roshad L. Smith, 28, is to be sentenced Feb. 22.
A jury on Wednesday found him guilty of attempted first-degree premeditated murder.
He shot at Sanford Officer Austin Robinson on Jan. 29, 2016, during an exchange of gunfire on U.S. Highway 17-92 near Sanford’s airport, according to an arrest report.
Robinson was unhurt, but a bystander, Donald Robert Smith, then 39, suffered a bullet wound to the leg.
Bianca Gillett, spokeswoman for the Sanford Police Department, said records do now show who fired the bullet that wounded the bystander.
He has since died of unrelated causes, she said.
Robinson was responding to a report that a man walking along the highway was pointing a gun at cars that whizzed past. Shortly after he spotted Roshad Smith, the defendant opened fire and the officer returned fire, according to an arrest report.
The suspect fled on foot but was arrested later that night.
Court records show that in 2008 the defendant pleaded no contest to manslaughter in Orange County and was sentenced to three years in state prison.
