A Secaucus DPW truck plowing snow on Seaview Drive burst into flames Thursday morning.

JERSEY CITY — A Secaucus Department of Public Works truck plowing snow on Seaview Drive burst into flames this morning.

At about 8:45 a.m. the driver noticed fire coming from the truck’s engine compartment and the flames quickly grew, stretching several feet above the truck’s roof, Secaucus Police Capt. Dennis Miller said.

The town fire department responded and dowsed the fire, Miller said, adding that there were no injuries.

Seven to eight inches of snow fell on Secaucus before the storm tapered off at about noon. The town has about 25 trucks clearing the streets, Secaucus Mayor Michael Gonnelli said at 1 p.m.

“It came down very hard and we had a lot of snow in a short period of time,” the mayor said, adding that he believes work clearing the street will continue until about 7 p.m. “I think the snow has passed.”

Gonnelli said that town hall, located at 1203 Paterson Plank Road, has been designated as a warming center but no one has used it for that purpose today. The city has also been clearing snow from the residences of senior citizens and others who need assistance.

Public schools in the town are closed for the day.
