SALEM — Oregon Secretary of State Dennis Richardson on Tuesday launched a campaign to restore and preserve the original Oregon State Constitution document.
The announcement coincides with the 158th anniversary of Oregon’s statehood day — February 14, 1859.
Holding the fading constitution and speaking to a crowd at the Oregon State Capitol rotunda, Richardson announced that the document preservation campaign aims to raise $100,000 to restore the constitution and commission a secure, environmentally controlled case so it can be displayed for the public.
“It’s not getting any younger,” Richardson said of the constitution, which was written in Salem in 1857 and taken to Washington D.C. to complete Oregon’s process of achieving statehood.
Anyone wishing to donate to the restoration project can go online to SOS.Oregon.Gov/OCC for more information.
