The U.S. Army’s World Class Athlete Program had a big day yesterday.

Army runners Leonard Korir and Shadrack Kipchirchir were first and third respectively at USA Track & Field Cross Country Championships in Bend.

In Winston-Salem, North Carolina, the U.S. Army’s Paul Chelimo won the 3,000 meters at the Camel City Elite Races, finishing four seconds in front of runner-up Lee Emanuel.

The experts at LetsRun.com write about both the USATF Cross Country Championships and Chelimo’s performance in their six takeaways from a busy day of racing.

I did this story last year on the distance runners in the Army’s World Class Athlete Program.

At that point, Chelimo and Kipchirchir were training under U.S. Olympian and West Linn High School graduate Dan Browne, and using the Nike campus as a training base.

Since I wrote that, and while my attention was diverted during the college football season, Chelimo and Kipchirchir apparently relocated to Colorado Springs.

Other athletes with local connections who made the medal stand at the USTF Cross Country Championships were Chris Derrick of the Bowerman Track Club and ex-University of Oregon runner Trevor Dunbar, who were fifth and sixth respectively in the men’s race, and the BTC’s Courtney Frerichs, fourth in the women’s race.
