MISSION HILLS >> Alemany High School already clinched its third consecutive Mission League boys basketball title, so this week is just a tune-up for next week’s CIF Southern Section playoffs.
The Warriors will likely head back into the Open Division when the seedings are announced this weekend and with a 74-52 home win over Harvard-Westlake Wednesday, Alemany is one game closer to a perfect league season.
“That was one of our goals before the year to go undefeated in league,” senior Brandon Davis said. “One more game and we got it.”
Davis, KJ Warren, Earnie Sears and Charlie Brady started and all had their moments in the Warriors’ 15th consecutive win.
Warren had three quick layups early in Alemany’s 16-0 run following Harvard-Westlake’s opening basket. He and Davis both finished with 17 points.
Sears, one of the state’s highest leapers, converted an alley-oop dunk in the third quarter off an assist from Davis. Brady, who started his first league game after starting most of last season, sank consecutive 3-pointers in the first quarter to the delight of the crowd.
Just for flair, Brady had a block to stop a Harvard-Westlake fastbreak.
“I wasn’t expecting everybody to blow up like that, but I’m glad they had my back,” Brady said. “I’ve been watching Alemany since second grade and I remember wondering if I could play at that level.”
Fred Odhiambo led Alemany (23-3, 11-0) with 20 points, including an alley-oop from Davis during a stretch of three consecutive Alemany dunks. With Harvard-Westlake (15-11, 7-4) without Cassius Stanley, who did not play because of a coach’s decision, Alemany led by as many as 30 points in the second half.
While Alemany will head to St. Francis Friday searching for perfection, Harvard-Westlake remained in second place with a one-game lead over Chaminade and Loyola. The Wolverines host Chaminade in their regular-season finale Friday.
“We just have to fight and bring energy no matter what,” senior Carter Begel said. “We have to fight and compete for a full 32 minutes because once the playoffs come, it’s fight for your life time.”
Begel scored nine points and Johnny Juzang led the Wolverines with 18 points.
