The national consensus appears to be shining on UTSA after the first season of Frank Wilson’s tenure at the school.

UTSA was given the highest rating by SB Nation.com reporter Morgan Moriarty in an examination of the 27 first-year coaches at their new schools in 2016.

Wilson directed the Roadrunners to a 6-7 record and took them to their first bowl appearance in school history, a loss in the New Mexico Bowl to New Mexico.

Considering the school was picked to scramble to stay out of the Conference USA West Division basement before the season, Wilson’s hiring has turned out as one of UTSA athletic director Lynn Hickey’s most notable hires after only one season.

UTSA and Wilson received a “super encouraging” rating from Moriarty, along with Justin Fuente at Virginia Tech, D.J. Durkin at Maryland, Clay Helton at USC, Mike Norvell at Memphis, Scott Frost at UCF and Mick Rolovich at Hawaii.

Wilson’s continued success will not only keep building the program, but also catch the attention of athletic directors at schools higher in the college football feeding chain.

It’s a scenario that likely has crossed Hickey’s mind several times during Wilson’s recent success.
