The good news keeps coming for the Notre Dame High School boys soccer team and after their 4-0 win over Harvard-Westlake Wednesday. The Knights clinched their first league title since 1992.

The Knights are 9-0 in Mission League play heading into Friday’s game at Loyola and senior Allen Moiseyev has scored 22 goals after scoring one in Wednesday night’s win.

“I couldn’t be prouder. I’m blown away by their dedication, commitment and the way they’ve played,” Notre Dame coach Patrick Thomsen said.

Notre Dame’s other league title came in 1990. Brandon Opazo, Henry Horowitz and Matt McGonigle also scored in Wednesday’s win, which was the Knights’ second consecutive shutout.

In January, the players said their ultimate goal was to win a CIF Southern Section championship, more than just a league title. Yet Thomsen also said they were aiming at following in Loyola’s footsteps with a perfect league season.

With the playoffs looming in two weeks, Thomsen said that goal will be managed with making sure his team is healthy and in the best situation to make a deep postseason run, something Notre Dame has not done in recent years.

“They saw what Loyola did and they want to keep that in the Mission League,” said Thomsen, referring to Loyola winning the Division 1 championship last year.

Sierra Canyon basketball ready for Bishop Gorman

Sierra Canyon’s demanding boys basketball schedule has taken the Trailblazers around the country and its final nonleague test of the regular season comes Saturday at the Nike Extravaganza at Mater Dei.

Sierra Canyon faces Nevada powerhouse Bishop Gorman and while Gorman is not as dominant this year as in recent years, it still presents one more challenge before the CIF Southern Section Open Division playoffs.

“You don’t want to go into the Open Division like you’ve never been there before,” Sierra Canyon coach Ty Nichols said. “Every game for us is a big game so our schedule shows our kids how it is to perform night in and night out if they want to do that at the next level.”

Sierra Canyon played McAuliffe Thursday night, its third game in three days. Saturday’s tipoff will be at 5:45 p.m. and the game, part of the evening session at the Extravaganza, is sold out.

“It’s another chance to be tested because we want to have a long run in the playoffs,” senior Terrance McBride said.
