Notre Dame scored two victories against Michigan in two days.

The Irish received an oral commitment from Class of 2018 cornerback Kalon Gervin on Monday. Gervin chose the Irish over Michigan and Michigan State, among others.

The 6-foot, 172-pound Detroit Cass Tech junior announced his commitment via Twitter. He is a four-star recruit, according to 247sports.com’s composite rankings. He is the Irish’s seventh oral commitment from his class.

His pledge came a day after former Michigan receiver Freddy Canteen announced he would transfer to Notre Dame as a graduate student.

The 6-foot-1, 185-pounder had six catches for 22 yards and a touchdown in six career games for the Wolverines.

Canteen missed last season after having multiple surgeries on his shoulders. He has two seasons of eligibility remaining. The Irish are scheduled to face Michigan in the 2018 season opener.

There’s no “assist” statistic in football. But if there were …

Dabo Swinney, the guy who said “love” carried his Clemson team to victory in the college football title game Monday night, visited with Joe Maddon while in Chicago for the NFL draft in April. Swinney said he and the Cubs manager forged an “instant connection,” and he left Wrigley Field thinking, “We are the target, but let’s embrace that.”

The Tigers now are champions, and Nick Saban, previously 97-0 at Alabama with a double-digit lead in the fourth quarter, now is 97-1.

Clemson’s dazzling victory also made Illinois State a transitive champion: ISU > Northwestern > Pitt > Clemson.

More significantly, it put the prettiest bow possible on another season that made you want to shout: Thank you, college football.

And now, a look ahead to the top teams in 2017.
