After Boban mania engulfed San Antonio last season, the 7-foot-3 star signed with the Detroit Pistons as a free agent before the 2016-2017 season.

But it wasn’t an easy choice for him. The big man’s original plan as a free agent was to stay in the city that had fallen in love with him, according to mySA.com archives.

Coach Gregg Popovich had to step in to help weigh his options.

“He’s such a good kid, at some point I had to work to get him to understand that $21 million was different than $3 million,” Popovich said. “I said, ‘Get your ass out of here. Go. You’ve got to do it.’ But he felt bad.”
