The Pirates on Thursday acquired reliever Pat Light from the Minnesota Twins for either a player to be named or cash.
To clear a spot on the 40-man roster, pitcher Lisalverto Bonilla was designated for assignment.
Light was DFA'd by the Twins on Monday.
As a rookie last season, Light, 25, made a combined 17 appearances for the Twins and Boston Red Sox. The right-hander posted an 11.34 ERA and a 2.14 WHIP, and he averaged 9.6 walks and 9.0 strikeouts per nine innings.
