The Great Britain-Canada Davis Cup tie was settled by the country that didn’t blast a ball into the umpire’s face.
Denis Shapovalov, 17, cost Canada the match when he smashed the ball in anger after getting broken in the third set. The ball connected with chair umpire Arnaud Gabas’ face, which resulted in a default — and Great Britain’s Kyle Edmund given the match. Edmund had won the first two sets of the deciding match, and the break put himĀ ahead in the third.
Gabas held his head in pain for minutes, as Shapovalov walked slowly toward the chair to see if he was OK. An apology wouldn’t stop Canada from falling 3-2 in a bizarre ending in Ottawa.
“It was a strange way to finish,” Edmund said, via the Telegraph. “I’ve never been part of something like that.”
