The last time Rutgers defeated Ohio State? That would be on Dec. 30, 1978, in the final of the ECAC Holiday Festival at Madison Square Garden in New York.

Long before he earned entry in the Rutgers Basketball Hall of Fame and a jersey that hangs from the RAC rafters, James Bailey was a star on the 1978-79 team. The 6-9 center turned in one of the most dominant performances of a career that saw him score 2,034 points and 1,047 rebounds as he tallied 31 points on 13-for-29 shooting to go along with seven rebounds in a triple-overtime, 97-96 classic.

The Scarlet Knights have dropped three straight games to the Buckeyes since then, and with all of the defeats coming in Big Ten play. Last year, Ohio State swept Rutgers in a pair of contests, including a 94-68 decision in Columbus on January 13, 2016.

After winning at Penn State to earn its first Big Ten road win in two-plus seasons in the conference last Saturday, Rutgers now faces a Buckeyes team on the heels of an upset triumph of its own.

Marc Loving scored 17 points and Trevor Thompson tallied 13 points and 11 rebounds as Ohio State stunned rival Michigan, 70-66, on Saturday.

The task of making it two straight road wins won’t be easy for the Scarlet Knights, who haven’t won consecutive league road wins since February 2000. The last time Rutgers won consecutive away conference games played back-to-back was in February 1991 as a member of the Atlantic 10.

The Buckeyes are tough to beat at Value City Arena, boasting more home wins than any team in the country since the 2009-10 season, with a 132-20 (.868) record in Columbus during that span.

This season, Ohio State is 12-4 at home.
