BERKELEY, Calif. — Playing without two of its most important pieces and trailing by as many as 23 points late in the first half, it would have been easy for the Colorado Buffaloes to count their losses and head home.

Instead the Buffs that were on the floor put up a tremendous fight in order to make it a game, but it wasn’t enough for CU to overcome two critical players who weren’t on the floor in a 77-66 defeat at Cal Sunday afternoon.

With fifth-year seniors Xavier Johnson and Wesley Gordon spending the day on the bench, the Buffs at times looked shellshocked as a hot-shooting cal team built a 23-point lead late in the first half.

Yet the Buffs were able to storm back behind an inspired effort from Derrick White, who scored five points in a 7-0 CU run that ended the first half. White then posted eight points in a 10-2 Buffs charge that opened the second half and trimmed Cal’s lead to 43-36 with 16 minutes, 12 seconds to go.

Cal kept the Buffs at bay until late, when a White 3-pointer with 3:15 left pulled the Buffs within 62-57, but CU couldn’t get any closer the rest of the way.

White finished with a game-high 25 points while Tory Miller, who made his second start of the season, recorded 10 points and nine rebounds. Four different players reached double-figure points for Cal, led by 17 from freshman guard Charlie Moore.
