Steve Sarkisian is leaving his current position as offensive coordinator with the University of Alabama to take the same job with the Atlanta Falcons.
The news was first reported by the Huffington Post and ESPN’s Adam Schefter and confirmed by the Falcons on social media.
Sarkisian tenure with Nick Saban and the Crimson Tide coaching staff was a brief one, to say the least.
He was hired as an offensive analyst for the team for much of last season after being fired from USC in 2015. Sarkisian was promoted to offensive coordinator a week before the National Championship Game in Tampa. He replaced another former USC coach Lane Kiffin, who was trying to balance being the Tide’s OC and his new job as head coach at Florida Atlantic.
Alabama would go on to lose the title game to Clemson 35-31.
Sarkisian takes over a job vacated by Kyle Shanahan, who was named the new head coach of the San Francisco 49ers on Monday. Shanahan spent two seasons with the Falcons, where he helped the team finish first in the NFL in scoring offense (36.0) and second in total offense.
The Falcons lost Super Bowl LI Sunday night to the New England Patriots 34-28 in overtime.
Sarkisian spent one season as the quarterbacks coach for the Oakland Raiders in 2004.
Saban must now find his third offensive coordinator in the past 30 days. Mike Locksley, who also worked as an offensive analyst, was promoted to co-offensive coordinator in mid-January could be an option.
