Things went right for the Giants on defense in 2016, thus it is no surprise Steve Spagnuolo, their veteran defensive coordinator, has received another standard, one-year contract extension. Spagnuolo, according to a league source, is now under contract through the 2018 season.

The Giants rarely allow members of their coaching staff to head into the final year on their contracts.

Spagnuolo returned to the Giants in 2015 on a two-year deal and after that season was extended one year, through the 2017 season.

Spagnuolo, 57, was the mastermind of the Giants’ defense that contained the high-powered, undefeated Patriots in Super Bowl XLII, a performance that helped him land the head-coaching job with the St. Louis Rams. Tom Coughlin brought Spagnuolo back in 2015 to stabilize a sagging defense, but it was not a happy reunion, as the Giants finished last in the NFL in yards allowed and gave up a ghastly 422 points.

Ben McAdoo took over as head coach and retained Spagnuolo, as the defense was fortified with more than $200 million worth of added talent. The Giants rose to finish as the No. 10 defense in the league in 2016, and Spagnuolo’s unit carried the team to an 11-5 record and the first playoff appearance for the franchise in five years.
