Warren Hills 46, Passaic Valley 15 — Rapid Recap
The Warren Hills Regional High School wrestling team put together arguably its most complete performance of the season, defeating Passaic Valley 46-15 in the semifinals of the NJSIAA North 2 Group 3 sectional tournament.
The host Blue Streaks won 11 bouts to advance to Friday’s sectional final.
Quick hitters: Starting the match at 132 pounds suited the Blue Streaks just fine. Junior standout Matt Valli set the tone with a 18-3 technical fall over Logan Rodriguez, followed by Zach Nauta’s 27-second pin of Luke Geleta at 138. Just like that Warren Hills led 11-0 and never looked back.
Top performer: Rashon Wade Taylor. Taylor put on a takedown clinic in majoring the Hornets’ Greg Fellanto 13-5 at 152. Taylor racked up six takedowns — mostly on deep double-legs — as Fellanto had no answer for his quickness and superior athleticism.
What it means: Warren Hills advances to Friday’s sectional final and a road date at top-seeded Cranford (19-0) at 7 p.m. Friday. The Blue Streaks will be looking to win their sixth sectional title and first since winning North 2 Group 3 in 2007. Cranford’s only two sectional championships (also in North 2 Group 3) came back-to-back in 1985 and 86.
